Wings
by James Thoune
Before the mighty eagle soars and swoops,
He first must learn to flex those fine, majestic wings;
He first must learn to fly;
It's just the way of things.
And before the gallant canine takes the lead,
He first must safely learn to walk, to play, to live;
He first must learn to love.
This is the age old way.
So to you who bravely stood to give
Your hearts, your hopes, your hands, your homes, your time, your lives,
I give my solemn pledge to nurture and protect
This perfect, faithful token of your trust and skill;
This wondrous, living gift--
My gallant canine wings.
